2024 – OVERSTRIKE SERIES #6 – 1964 KENNEDY HALF W/ $10 INDIAN OBVERSE – 30MM (ONLY 250 MINTED) IN COINSAFE CAPSULE AND C.O.A.
We have acquired a large hoard of 1964 Kennedy Halves for our new Overstrike series. We are overstriking them with images of famous U.S. coinage obverses and a common reverse that celebrates the series. In the first product of the series, we have related the iconic Peace Dollar with the current year (2024). We will issue a new product in the series each month and update the year on each design in subsequent years. In 2024, ONLY 250 pieces will be minted for each product. About the $10 Indian: Design The coin’s obverse features Lady Liberty wearing an American Indian war bonnet, while the reverse depicts a bald eagle with an olive branch and arrows. The design was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, a renowned American sculptor, at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt. It was intended to capture the spirit of American democracy and freedom and was a departure from the traditional, formal portraits of political leaders on American coins. Production The US Mint produced the $10 Indian Head Gold Eagle from 1907–1933, with some interruptions. The coins were minted in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. The Philadelphia Mint coins do not have mint marks. Historical context The $10 Indian Head Gold Eagle was minted in the early 20th century during a period of industrial growth and urbanization. The nation was shifting towards a gold-backed economy, which led to a surge in demand for gold coins. Significance The $10 Indian Head Gold Eagle is considered one of the most stunning US coins ever made. It is also one of the last gold coins minted in the US for over 70 years. End of production In March 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt ordered that no more gold coins be released from the Treasury. The Mint stopped production of gold coins, ending the Eagles series. e Indian Head cent, also known as an Indian Head penny, was a one-cent coin ($0.01) produced by the United States Bureau of the Mint from 1859 to 1909. The Chief Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint, James Barton Longacre designed it.
